BRIEF PROFILE OF STELLA MUSE WHITEHEAD

Stella Elizabeth Muse was born in Savannah Georgia, August 6, 1890. She developed writing skills at an early age, and her first article was published when she was only eight. Her mother died when Stella was only five and she lost her Father a short time later. It is no wonder that some of her writings have just a tinge of sadness. Nevertheless, they were all beautiful - to her, beauty and art were synonymous. She was Poet Laureate of the State of Mississippi for several years and published a book of poems titled Viewpoints in 1963. She has been honored by the Poetry Society of Georgia and her poetry has appeared in many publications in the U.S. and abroad. The Japanese magazine entitled "The Study of Current English" featured her poems monthly with both Japanese and English translations. Other publications have compared her poetry to that of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Emily Dickenson, but Stella had her own distinctive style. Her favorite type of poetry was the Sonnet, but she wrote verse in many different ways according to the mood of the poem. Most of her poems were short, making their point immediately. She truly believed in these words from her poem "Forever Song": "Nothing is lost, for when the sweet song dies, the echo lingers still, far out in space . "
